Artist Statement
I close my eyes, and I see work fully formed. I sit in silence, and I hear complete symphonies. Every detail of a work is all but made before it is started. Then I do a quick drawing to capture what I just experienced. This drawing never changes, even if I do. Deep in thought, I recoil within myself, not to discover its meaning but rather breathe it in, like the pungent smell of urine on an August morning in a New York subway. Ah, I am home. I resist naming it until it tells me its name and why it is here, and I become the viewer, and it becomes the artist.
Efflorescence Refrigerator Sculptures and Prints
Efflorescence Refrigerator Print: The white staining that occurs on cement is called efflorescence. It results from salt that leaches from the cement when it is exposed to water and surface temperature fluctuations. I have started a new sculpture/print series by controlling this event. I take a standing refrigerator and remove the door. I replace the door with a cement door that I have made. The compounds I add to the cement mixture and salt applied to the inside of the door cause a reaction. Inside the refrigerator, it is cool. The outside of the door is warm. The temperature disparity within the cement causes condensation on the outside of the door. This condensation pulls the salts through the door and creates a highly controlled white image on the outside.
